The disturbing news that emerged from Austria this week that captured international attention is the story of a 73-year-old electrician, Josef Fritzl, who has confessed to have imprisoned his daughter, Elisabeth, for 24 years in a dingy dungeon, fathering seven children with her ( )

This is a sad commentary of human wantonness. While details of the story are still awaited, one wonders how such a thing can go unnoticed for such a long period, especially when there have been other family members and tenants living in that same quarters all these years. Josef Fritzl, is obviously a sick man, fitting the description of a psychopath, needing psychiatric interventions. My thoughts go to the victim and her children, who have been deprived of their basic human dignity and worth. Society cannot take these crimes lightly. I hope the Austrian judicial system will award Josef Fritzlthe right punishment for the heinous and deplorable crime done against his entire family, and more importantly to his daughter and her innocent children.
